This Spring paint out location is the one you’ve been waiting for! The landscape is dramatic; canyon walls, red rocks, low water crossings and Junipers.  Load up your gear and head out to the “Texas version” of the Grand Canyon - our own Palo Duro Canyon.  Located in the Texas panhandle 27 miles southeast of Amarillo, Palo Duro is the 2nd largest canyon in the United States (the other one is somewhere west of El Paso).

This terra cotta badland attracts plein air painters for hundreds of miles from all directions.  Formed by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River, the Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level.

The last time OPS painted Palo Duro it was 38 degrees and winds whipping us around at 45 mph!  We're returning in May with the thought that the weather and colors should be excellent, we’re also hoping that our members from neighboring states can make it to north Texas for several days of canyon painting and camaraderie.  If you still have a couple of 10x20 panorama canvases lying around, there’s no excuse now!
