Plein Air Southwest is a juried plein air competition, exhibition and sale presented by the Outdoor Painters Society and hosted by the Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport, Texas. The competition artists are members of the Outdoor Painters Society and considered some of the "best of the best" plein air painters working today.

Plein Air Southwest has earned the reputation as one of the premier events of Spring. The Outdoor Painters Society sponsors the event to showcase the incredible talent within our membership and to promote an appreciation for the process of painting “en plein air”. All works are completed outdoors on location and are characterized by the bold use of color, design and the freshness of paint application.

The 2018 event will mark a new format and paint out location! Plein Air Southwest has emerged from a salon-style gallery exhibition into a 6-day paint out competition followed by a 3-week show & sale of plein air work produced during the official paint out period of May 21 - 25, 2018. The host venue for 2018 is Rockport Center for the Arts in Rockport, Texas. This area on the Texas Gulf Coast is rich with subject matter that appeals to all plein air painters!

Rockport Center for the Arts sustained devastating damage from Harvey, but continues to host community-driven arts events such as Art Educator Days, ArtLink for Kids, the Rockport Film Festival, a Music Performance Series, and the Rockport Clay Expo are just a few examples. Rockport itself has over 200 working artists, a variety of downtown art galleries, and was recently named a "Top 10 Coastal Art Colony" by Coastal Living Magazine. The Art Center's sculpture garden boasts works by internationally acclaimed granite sculptor Jesus Moroles, as well as acclaimed sculptors Kent Ullberg, Sandy Scott, Charles Umlauf, and James Surls.
